Why the Eagles should not trade for Deshaun Watson (3/18/21)

There have been rumors swirling around that the Eagles have interest in trading for Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson, and I’m here to explain why that would be a very bad decision for a franchise that’s all about bad decisions.

Recent allegations

It has recently been reported that Watson has been accused of sexual assault in a third civil lawsuit. If this happens to be the case, then it would be a very bad look for the Eagles to trade for him after being proven guilty of sexual assault. A player like that could bring negative vibes and create a cancerous locker room environment.

Cap Space problems

The Eagles have a salary cap issue. Out of all 32 teams in the league the Eagles are 29th in cap space. Deshaun Watson is the third highest paid quarterback in the NFL, getting paid 39 mil/year. With the Eagles limited in money that they can spend, it will be extremely difficult for them to try and make cap room for his expensive contract. It will prevent them from spending money elsewhere like on the defensive side of the ball.

A young quarterback with loads of potential

Yes, Deshaun Watson is a great player, but where the Eagles are at right now it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. They are about to enter a rebuild, and they have a 22 year old quarterback who has shown plenty of potential in Jalen Hurts. Adding Watson would mean already giving up on Hurts, even though he’s only started four games.
